Bernhardt's mother was neglectful and often absent, and her father was completely uninvolved in her life. Prior to the age of five, Sarah nearly died of Tuberculosis. Doctors claimed the young girl would not live to see adulthood. Upon learning this, Sarah asked her mother for a beautiful coffin to be buried in; however, her mother declined, providing her with a standard coffin, which Sarah would often sleep in, even into adulthood. It is said that she carried the coffin with her while traveling and on tours. Interesting Facts: During her 1905 performance of "La Tosca" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the actress jumped off a parapet in the end scene and severely injured her right knee. Nearly ten years later, the leg was amputated due to a gangrene infection. Today, Bernhardt has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 83% (8) Men in Black Peles Castle was host to grand figures guests from royalty and politicians to artists. One of the most memorable visits was that of Kaiser Franz Joseph I of Austro-Hungary, then one of the world's most powerful men, on 2 October 1896, who later wrote in a letter: The Royal Castle amongst other monuments, surrounded by extremely pretty landscape with gardens built on terraces, all at the edge of dense forests. Mucha Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) is most often remembered for the prominent role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the century. As a struggling and relatively unknown artist of Czech origin living in Paris, Mucha achieved immediate fame when, in December 1894, he accepted a commission to create a poster for one of the greatest actresses of this time, Sarah Bernhardt. Though the printer was apprehensive about submitting Mucha?s final design because of its new unconventional style, Bernhardt loved it and so did the public. ?Le style Mucha?, as Art Nouveau was known in its earliest days, was born. The success of that first poster brought a 6 years contract between Bernhardt and Mucha and in the following years his work for her and others included costumes and stage decorations, designs for magazines and book covers, jewellery and furniture and numerous posters. Mucha returned to Czechoslovakia in 1910, where he dedicated the remainder of his life to the production of a an epic series of 20 paintings depicting the history of the Slav people, the Slav Epic.
